Rapid-Flashing Beacons installed across greater Green Bay with help from 2022 Referendum
In a partnership with the Green Bay Area Public School District, the city of Green Bay started the installation of 64 rectangular rapid-flashing beacons as a way to encourage pedestrian safety around our schools across the greater Green Bay community.
RRFBs are lights that flash to alert drivers that pedestrians are crossing. Yielding to pedestrians crossing at crosswalks is Wisconsin law.
Once the 64 RRFBs are installed, 66 school speed limit signs with driver feedback signs with blinking LED perimeter lights will be installed. This will mostly begin in 2024.
The $1.6 million RRFBs and driver feedback signs were funded in part by $1.3 million from the 2022 Referendum, as well as city of Green Bay ARPA funds.
Installation will have a major, positive impact on pedestrian safety, with RRFBs generally reducing crashes by 47% and increasing drivers’ yielding up to 96%.
“They make our entire community a place that we can walk, we can bike…and that we can have a healthier lifestyle,” Dr. Claude Tiller, Jr. said at a press conference on September 5.
RRFBs are a direct result of the District and city’s commitment to the Safe Walk and Bike Plan meant to capture both a Safe Routes to School plan and a Bicycle & Pedestrian plan.
