Orchard Plantings Continue at GBAPS

Orchard plantings continue at three more GBAPS campuses

Students at Edison Middle School, Lombardi Middle School and Southwest High School spent some time outdoors to plant orchards on their campuses on October 20.

Students from Southwest High School’s agricultural class planted six fruit trees next to the existing greenhouse and chicken coop.

Fruit grown from these trees will be utilized by school agriculture and Future Farmers of America programs.

The orchard plantings were made possible thanks to volunteers from Leadership Green Bay, a program of the Greater Green Bay Chamber.

Leadership Green Bay Participant Tom Murphy said the program works on community leadership and getting people involved in the community.

“Everyone in the class gets split into project teams and has to complete a project benefiting the community,” Murphy said. “So in this case, this is our project benefiting the community.”

The volunteers from Leadership Green Bay partnered with New Leaf Foods for the trees, Murphy said.

Similar orchards were planted back in May at Chappell Elementary School and Red Smith School thanks to Leadership Green Bay and New Leaf Foods.
